Ambassador Haidari Calls on H.E. Former President Mahindra Rajapaksa to Discuss Growing Bilateral Relations
Colombo: - Following his recent meeting with HE Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ambassador M. Ashraf Haidari called on the Leader of Sri Lankan Opposition HE Former President Mahindra Rajapaksa on April 05, 2019. They discussed the status of Afghanistan-Sri Lanka bilateral relations, the expansion and deepening of which the Former President strongly supports.
Ambassador Haidari appreciated HE Former President Rajapaksa's early initiative alongside his former counterpart HE President Hamid Karzai to elevate Afghanistan-Sri Lanka bilateral relations by opening resident diplomatic missions in Kabul and Colombo in 2013 and 2014, since when both sides have signed several bilateral MOUs and agreements, encompassing cooperation in key socioeconomic sectors.
They also discussed the ongoing imposed war in in Afghanistan, as well as the need for sincere regional cooperation to support the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process to achieve sustainable and dignified peace in Afghanistan.
Ambassador Haidari noted that Afghanistan could learn from the war-to-peace-transition of Sri Lanka, encouraging a delegation from the Afghan High Peace Council to visit Sri Lanka for any relevant lessons on reconciliation with and reintegration of former combatants to be learned—which the Former President welcomed, so did HE Prime Minister Wickremesinghe earlier.
